92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

Ok I have a 92 camaro rs with a 305 TBI automatic. When i first start the car the transmission will shift into reverse and all gears. after the engine has been running for about 10 min when i put the shifter into reverse the transmission does not shift into reverse (if i turn the car off then turn it back on and go to reverse is shifts) It will continue to shift into all other gears for a little while but then looses them and wont shift into any gears. After the car sits and cools down it will shift again until it warms up. If i start driving the car when its cold it drives fine but if im in drive and the car warms up the transmission quits working again. The engine will just rev up but nothing else. I checked the fluid and it is full. Please help im lost!!

I've failed a half dozen of these, and successfully rebuilt a few, but I've never heard of that. Is your throttle valve cable adjusted correctly? If so, you're looking at a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Im really not sure if the cable is adjusted correctly. There are three cables by the throttle two in the front one bottom and one top and one behind the top cable. which cable am i looking at? . How can i tell if its adjusted right? Also i was thinking maybe the pump went out.

Re: 92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

It would be good if you could get a pressure reading when the problem happens. If the pressure drops off when running for a while I would suspect a clogged filter. If this is the case. Then the problem is ( what caused the filter to be clogged? ) Usually the the clutches are breaking down
. Question does the fluid smell burned and how is the color? Hope that helps

If your able to remove the transmission pan, replace the filter and refill the transmission. Check the debris in the pan and filter if it's non metalic the filter change may buy you some time. You may have to overhaul in the future.

Re: 92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

This problem is so simple. It's a failed torque converter!!!!!!!!!!! No movement when hot forwards or backwards I've seen it too many times to count. Your description is perfect. In your trans 700r4 they have different elements holding in forwards and reverse but your torque converter is dumb and doesn't discriminate. It only knows if your engine is revved up and it's not holding when hot when your engine revvs up. Your local torque converter shop should be able to cut your old torque converter open to verify before you spend any money on your transmission. Note: in reverse the reverse input clutches are on and low reverse clutches are on..--but in forwards when in drive position first gear; forward clutches are on forward sprag is on and the low roller clutch is on. Have fun pulling it out. My money is on the converter$$$$$$$

Re: 92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

The key here is the pressure check. If the trans has pressure and don't move in gear I'll agree about the converter. If it has no pressure it can't be the converter, the filter is most probably blocked by clutch decomposition or metal parts failure. The pressure test is step one in all situations where there is still some movement and the vehicle is able to be driven. Why guess when it's so easy to do it the proper way.

Re: 92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

Following sgt slaughters instructions check the main line oil pressure reading off of the pipe plug located on the drivers side front of the trans just above the shifter. Note: it is the only one located on that side of the case. Readings should be approx. 55-64psi in park, neutral, overdrive, and manual third @1000rpm while at minimum T.V.. and 119-179 at full T.V..------AND DON'T DO THIS TEST FOR MORE THAN TWO MINUTES*APPLY YOUR BRAKES!!! You can do more oil tests than this but it gets redundant if you see it pumping, pumping, pumping, but NOT MOVING---again $$$$on converter.

Re: 92 rs 305 transmission help!!!

You should really have a gauge and the trans should be at the temp where the problem exists. You may still have flow but not enough pressure to apply the clutches. You can pull the pan and check for debris and change the filter .If the filter change works it may buy you some time, or as Ed says the converter may be bad in which case you may find a lot of metal in the pan.
Good luck
