Alright, here's the deal.. I have a 700-R4 with 3 different colored wires coming from it.. I have heard from different sources that I can either ground one out or supply +12v to another, blah blah blah, basically no one can give me a straight answer.. and I need to figure this out soon.
I have read replies in the archives talking about how to wire it through the brake switch, but I want to know if there's any way I can just hook a switch to one of the 3 wrires to control lockup, and I'll just remember to unlock it when I go to slow down? (I used to have to do this when it was connected through the ALDL.. but now that mod won't work, as the ECM is not hooked up anymore..) Or perhaps could someone explain how to wire it through the brake switch in more detail? I am completely confused..
Any info would be appreciated. I don't want to spend any money on a kit or anything if I don't have to..

HAD SOMEWHAT THE SAME PROBLEM.MY REBUILT 700R WAS FROM A 84 Z-28,AND WAS GOING INTO A V-6 CAR THAT HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO A 327CID PERFORMER CARB SETUP.THE OVERDRIVE TRANNIES CAME OUT IN '82,SO HOW DID THEY GET THEM TO LOCK WITHOUT A ECM? VACUUM SOLENOIDS.I WENT HUNTING THE LOCAL SALVAGE YARD AND FOUND THE ONE I NEEDED OFF A PRE-COMPUTER CAR.I THINK IT WAS A F-BODY THOUGH.DIDN'T WANT IT TO LOCK DIFFERENT IF MODELS DIFFER.YOU SHOULD FIND IT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE FIREWALL.IT IS EASY TO HOOK UP.IT'S BEEN A COUPLE YEARS BUT I THINK I PLUGGED IT INTO THE INTAKE FOR VACUUM AND THEN IT'S A MATTER OF GETTING A HOT CONNECTION AND A GROUND.THE TRANNIE GUY HAD THE PROPER WIRES ALL READY ON THE TRANS END.MINE HAS BEEN DEPENDABLE SO FAR. 1986 BERLINETTA SC 327CID 94'TPI HEADS(PORTED) 214-224,.420-.442SUMMIT CAM FACTORY ALUM.H.O. 82's have an ecm controled lock-up torque converter. Could not get an overdrive though, it was a th200c tranny. An aftermarket lock-up kit will fix the problem.

oops,82camaro was right about 82's having a computer controlled tc,(sorry)but my car locks up fine .i'm unsure how it all works with the ecm,but couldn't the solenoid work independently from the computer if vacuum was stable in forth gear and it has power? this seems to be what my car does.maybe i'm mistaken and way off base .if so,why does my car work?

Sure that would work and thats exactly how the TCI kit is set-up. It works in my car anyway.

If you drop your sump pan off you will se there are two wires going to the TCC solenoid.Cut one and earth it to a valve body bolt or any other bolt you want. Then the other wire can be run up through the electrical connector on the side of the trans. Then run this wire into the car and connect to a live feed via an old fashioned headlight dipswitch. You can then operate the lock up solenoid whenever you want.
