Backlash?

The pinion depth was no problem. I've switched carriers and need an algorithm (list of steps) ((detailed please)) for checking backlash. I know the spec is .008 of an inch but have no idea how to check this, what to check it with, and what it actually measures. I would be greatly honored to be enlightened.

You measure it at the outer edge of the ring gear teeth. It's how far the ring gear moves back and forth with the pinion held still. A dial indicator is the correct tool.

Exactly what RB said. Here is a link that shows a rear being put together, including backlash: 10 bolt

You *do* need a dial indicator to measure backlash. Maybe someone with a lot of experience could guess at the backlash, but even just .005 feels like more when you rock the ring gear back and forth, so it's easy to end up with too little by just guessing. Moving .004 of shim will change the backlash .002, according to Helm.

Thank you all for the info. I understand why the backlash is important but still need to know what kind of indicator, where to get one, and where to mount it to check the spec. The link was great, by the way, and I printed the instructions for reference. However, my ignorance still requires a more specific instruction sequence. Thanks again to all for what you have provided.
