ok my 200 is on its last legs. I was in formed that the later model 700r4 that fits my 2.8 is much better. My only problem is this: i can get the V6 700r from a 92 w/3.1 but my 83 is carburated and the 92 has fuel injection. will this matter. what should i expect to encounter while doing the switch. is this even possible??Trans experts please answer cuase i got 1 week before i need to have work begin......

Supposedly the transmissions for carbureted cars use different TV springs than those for fuel-injected cars. Everything will still work but you might not have the same shift points and feel. One of the experts can give you a better answer.

Go with the TH-200-R4 tranny, bolts right up, same driveshaft, TV cable, TCC plug, only problem is torque arm mount and moving rear crossmember, see posts here about 700-R4 into 200c car post 'bout March 29 date.

You're car is orginally/currently equipped with a 200, correct? If so I think you'd be better off sticking with the 200. A properly built one is on par with the 700R4's. Try calling Pro-built (1-800-776-3288). He frequents this board and might reply to this post as it is. Check him out though.

Switch it. The stock 200 is junk and is not worth rebuilding. You will need a driveshaft from the donor and you will need to redrill the frame for the 700r4 crossmember. If you can't get the nuts welded in, use a washer.

As for any other probs, you will need to find a way to lock up the torque converter clutch in 4th. There are many ways to do this, but with a v6 hardwiring it on isn't a good idea (it will bog when it hits 4th). Either a manual switch or a vacuum switch will work.

I'm pretty sure (about 99.9999%) there are NO 2004r transmissions with the 60 degree chevy bolt pattern so this is out....

Every 200-R4 I've seen has the universal bell housing, bolts to B-O-P and Chevy, still the best swap from a 200C, which was a trash tranny, otherwise, you need a driveshaft and tv cable and other parts.

Not every 2004R has the chevy pattern (only BOP) and even if it does have the chevy pattern, it will NOT work behind a chevy 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 motor to name a few, just like a v8 700R4 cannot be used behind a v6 in a 3rd gen.

Albeit some 6 cylinder motors WILL work (like the 4.3 and all chevy 90 degree v-6's)

My apoligies, I did not note that he did not have a 305 in his car, as I do. If you have a 305 82 automatic, it will come with the 200-C tranny, no other and I went to the 200-R4, and it worked out delightful for me!

The 200 is a greta street transmission if taken care of and not beat on. I have an 82 with a V6 2.8I have had it in and out 12 times and have plenty of experience. The reasons I have had it out have nothing to do with the strength of the tranny. instead it was a leak caused by the kinked cooling line that i didn't find for a year. anyway The bellhousing will match with the 3.1 because ehy are both 60 degree v6's and they have the same bolt pattern. Be careful with how you set the TV cable becasue that controls the shifting and it can seriously screw upi your tranny. You will also have to get a new driveshaft beor have yours shortened becasue the 700 is longer by like 3 uinches or something like that.

Yes the 200c can live a long life, but the cost of rebuilding/replacing one is not really worth it. The parts are more than a th350 which is stronger and much more plentiful in cores (I could get them for $5 a core) and are a simple replacement for the 200 (for us v8 guys).

Now I pass over many good v6 700R4 that they can't even give away, let alone sell from the pre 87 era. I would still recommend redcamaro83 to go with a 88 or better v6 700R4 because the OD is great for long highway cruises, but even a pre 700R4 would be a helluva lot better than a 200c IMO.
