I took out the transmission in my '84 Z28 Camaro. I need to know how to take the top part of the transmission off so I can see the gears. I took all the bolts off the plate on top and still can not get it off.

 

You can't get it off because there is a shift lever rod attached to the shifter forks in the main case that runs all the way thru the tail housing to the shifter hole.

See my reply to "T-5 5th gear problem" on how to disassemble most of that part of the trans. After the tail housing is off, the top plate comes off by pushing it towards the pass. side and lifting up (almost simultaneously!)
