spider gear Q's

Is it normal for spider gears to make some noise? I am currently puting an open rear in my car and while spinning the driver side axle(ring and pinion not moving) I can hear the spider gears contacting, not loud, but about the same volume of a quiet conversation. Spiders appear to be in good condition. Any thoughts? Side note backlash is at .009 if that helps eliminate anything.

Yes, it is common for them to make a little noise when you hold the differential in your hand and turn the gears. Check the thrust washers behind all of the gears for damage, and to be sure that they are where they are suppose to be.
