I have only seen one guy scatter a 10 bolt rear and he was running 9s in his 84ta with nos and slicks. From what he said this was his seciond rear and he has been running in the nines for 4 years on this seciond one he hit seciond gear and it scattered the ring gear. I have listened to people talk about ruining 10 bolts but how many people accually do this. I have a 9 bolt and I am not worried about this but I am wanting to know all that I can about the third gen.

It sound like he's running big time after market upgrades for the 10 bolt.
I was thinking of going to a 9 bolt myself, but it might be more cost effective to upgrade my 10 bolt instead.
Check out this site. It tells you how.

I have a stock motor and I slit the pinion in 6 places all around it. I heard it starting to get noisy so I took it to the shop and had them check it out. I was lucky i didn't let it go longer. I sounded like the bearing was gone but I ended up putting a used set of 3.42's in to get me by and they are working alright. I don't think they are long for this world either. I have yet to meet someone that can set up a rearend in one of these things. I need to get out of my little 1 horse town HAHAHAH.

I cracked my original 3.73 10-bolt after the trans rebuild, the carrier had a huge fracture all the way around it which let the pinion loose, and the side/spiders were ground to bits. The 1>2 shift did it at about 5,200rpm
It had about 86K miles on it, though. I've got 3.42's now.

The reason I ask is I have seen 4th gens run 10s on the stock rear with 4.11:1 gears in them thats why I can't see the rears being that bad I have seen more guys in stangs arround here loose theyr 8.8 more than the gm 10 bolts. Maybe the third gens didn't have the production standards that the 4th gens do with the rear diff.

I only have 6 hard passes on my 10 bolt and it's survived so far. A stock rear end isn't expected to survive but a few aftermarket parts to beef it up and it will take a lot more abuse. About the only thing still stock about my diff is the case (not counting the welded axle tubes).
The only reason I don't run a 9 bolt any more is the lack of performance parts. The ones that are available are not worth the extra price.
