driveshafts

someone told me an aluminum driveshaft out of a 4th gen will fit in a 3rd gen car. he also stated that he lost 2 tenths off of his 1/4 time by doing only this swap. any one know if this is true? i called my local junk yards and they list a 1 and a 2 piece shaft. the one piece shaft also has some kinda saftey option and he said that its not the same as a one piece without the option? any know about this?

3rd and 4th gen drive shafts are the same. you should cut et with one. no idea about the 1 and 2 piece thing.

If you get it from a junk yard, tell them you want a drivetrain shop to test it for straightness. (I don't know if that is a word, but I bought one and mine caused nasty vibrations, called the junk yard they said I probably just needed a new u-joint. Replaced it. Same problem. Took it to a drivetrain shop they tested it and said it was slightly bent. Also they said it is balanced at the factory, and even small rock dints and dried mud can throw your car into a crazy vibrating machine.

I doubt you would gain that much in the quarter mile. Junk-yards like to lift up cars and move them around with a fork lift, bending driveshafts. What he said above, have it balanced

They are a direct swap, and an easy one at that. Mine took me about 15 minutes in my driveway with just a 7/16" wrench.

Can't say that I felt a difference with the LS1 DS, and I have no timeslips to say otherwise, but the 80MPH vibration went away.

Also, the 1 piece 2 piece deal is this:
The 1 piece is an aluminum shaft, and comes on 98+ V8 equipped cars. The 2 piece shaft is steel, and comes on the 93+ V6 powered cars.

I swapped from a 2.5" steel to a 98+ LS1 3" aluminum shaft in my 95 Z28 A4. Paid $220 shipped new from Jason Cromer at www.samtaylor.com . I don't have any timeslips to show improved ET's. The new LS1 driveshaft eliminated the vibrations inherent to the LT1 "vibeshaft" equipped cars. Also, it is 7+ lbs lighter than the steel shaft it replaced.
