Rear End Heat

How warm or hot should the rear end get. I noticed the other day that after a 30 mile drive I could not hold my hand on the differential because it was so hot. I didn't think they got that hot, but I guess I have never checked it. Does this sound right and if not what should I look for? I am assuming fluid level. Anything else? Thanks.

Yea they do get fairly hot. The fluid level should be checked or fluid should be replaced and you should see if the breather hose is free of debre.
