Whats the difference between a 700R4 and 4L60?

How do I know which is in my 91 T.A.? And is it a 4L60E? I might have to order a brand new one. Does anyonehave any suggestions on brands and or types of trannys? And can someone tell me the procedures for flushing a tranny. I'm having trouble with mine lately. Thanks!!!

Where on the car can I check to be sure? Back in 97 the tranny place that did the car said I had a 4L60E or they said 4L60. I'm not sure. The VIN# is : 1G2FW2381ML240396, if that helps. There also are no vacuum lines going to the tranny, that I see.

One more thing. Last month I ordered a DERALE tranny pan with the cooloing tubes for a 700R4 from Jegs and I had to send it back. I got it and it was way TOO BIG!!

You don't have a 4L60E.

i might be wrong, but i think that the 4L60 is the same as the 700R4. if it is the same as stock, there is no chance it is a 4L60E (electronic version used in 4th gens).

Can anyone explain that? Did they just send me the wrong one?

a 4L60 and TH700R4 are the same thing, GM changed the designation for the 700 to 4L60 in i Believe 1990.
If you had a 4L60-E you would also have to have a PCM installed to control the tranny.
the 4L60/TH700R4 was used from 1982-1993.
The 4L60-E debuted in 1994 (yes the first 4th gens had 700R4's).

That's pretty much right, from what I've heard, there is no difference between the 700R4 and 4L60, but the 4L60E is computer controlled. I have two friends, one with a '93 Formula, and one with a '94 Formula. Same options, but the one with the '94 had a performance/economy button, the '93 didnt, so the E made its debut in 94.

Yea, I used to sell the 4th gen. and the 4L60 is a 700-r4. The 4L60E is the electronically controlled. Hence the "E". And yes, 1994 was the first year in the 4th gen. It was in the Vette in 1992. FYI.

OK, I'm convinced that I have the 700R4/4L60. Can anyone reccomend a good brand to buy (maybe the part# too)? And any experiences they have had with an aftermarket tranny. Thanks for all the help guys!!!!!!

Why not just have your tranny rebuilt, with what you want to have in it.
Make sure to consider what you want out of it, will it have to handle high HP and do you want it to shift hard and do you like to manually shift. These are all options to consider along w/ many others.

I just had it rebuilt in '97, just to have it screw up now. I don't think I should have to rebuild it so soon after the last rebuild. Someone told me that you can only rebuild them so many times. Plus I don't trust anybody over here in England (USAF) to do it.
