Found out why the transmission was slipping..

I have a 4L60E.
Started last night to take the Input Clutch Housing apart. We found a large crack througout one of the pistons. The name that the book gives this piston is "Piston, Forward Clutch".

What would cause this to crack?

This is my first teardown on a automatic, so far so good.

It happens once in awhile. I have built hundreds of 700R4's and have only seen this happen once to the forward piston. Just pick up another one and examine it closely. Are you doing any of the updates? Valve body kit? Etc. If you need any help or information feel free to give me a call at 800 7763288 Mon-Sat 11-7 PST.
Glad Too Help!!!
