Any torque converter will help a car that has had modifications done to it. A stock converter is designed for a stock engine. Converter selection is always "you get what you pay for" Although a medium stall converter can run from $200-$400, a good race converter may start at $800. Stall speed selection also depends on your car and engine. Just because someone gained .5 with a specific converter doesn't mean you will also. Stall speed should be a couple of hundred rpm higher than your peak torque.

When you look at stock eliminator cars. They dyno the engine before selecting a converter.

You can use an off the shelf converter and get improvement but your best choice is to contact the converter manufacture. Once they have all the information about your car and engine, they will suggest the best converter for your application.

I use a JW 3800 stall 10" Sportsman converter. It had close to the stall speed that I needed and was cheap because it isn't designed for NOS or a transbrake. The converter I'm probably going to have to get, once I get a transbrake, will cost twice as much as this JW converter but as I mentioned before. You get what you pay for.
