Tranny still shifts at 6000 RPM.

Ever since I got my car, the transmission always shifted at between 5500 and 6000 rpm under WOT. I've changed the TV cable and adjusted it many, many times, and I put a brand new governer in, and it still shifts at 6k. What do I do next? I have to get my shift points down. My motor falls on it's face by 4500.

Did you change the rear tire diameter or gear ratio? What was the new governor calibrated for? I have a bucket full of governors and each one has different weights and springs, If you are shifting too high at WOT you need a governor with heavier weights, these are real world figures here, I don't care what whoever sold you that new governor says you need one with heavier weights. You can ignore this if you like and keep wasting your time with others advice, or experiment with different governors, it's up to you.

Stock gears and tire size. I bought the new governor directly from GM with the part number that was specific for my car, and it made absolutely ZERO difference from the governor that was already in the trans, which as far as I could tell was the original unit. There were no scratches or other marks on the cover that indicated that it had been previously removed.

Did the governor have inner weights that sort of come to a point or did it have a square end with a letter on it? A full on IROC tranny SHOULD shift at 5500. What is the tachs indicated red line? You can probably go to a local tranny shop and get a 'C' governor to knock it down to @4500 but wouldn't you rather fix the motor to rev to it's potential?

PS: I see you are in Rochester. I'll trade you a 'C' governor for the one you have if you like.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not in Rochester anymore. I did not realize that the IROC was supposed to shift at 5500. I was always under the impression that they were designed to shift at 4700.

Of course I would, but I don't currently have the money laying around for heads, cam and a mini ram. If I did, I'd use the money to put a T56 in anyway.

My point on the RPM's is that it is supposed to shift at those RPM's. Not that you have to go buy all of those parts to get it to. There could be a simple problem such as low fuel pressure/flow at high RPM's. Or even a bad coil!

Maybe it's supposed to shift at 5500, but not 6,000. Hell, most TPI cars redlined at 5,000 which is why I thought that they shifted at 4700 from the factory. Why would GM have a transmission shift at 500 rpm past the factory redline? It doesn't make much sense to me.

My car pulls fairly well to 6k considering that I'm feeding a 10.5:1 355 through a 100% stock throttle body, plenum, runners and base. I haven't gone near any of it with a grinder or a dremmel. The fuel pump, injectors, coil, distributer cap, rotor, plugs and wires are all virtually brand new.

Hmm, I may be off here then. Most Z's go to 5K while the IROC goes to 5500. If your's has the 5K redline then that is what is supposed to be the WOT point. Usually they hit it right on the mark. Hell, my 2.8 camaro redlines at 5500 and it is just like there is a swich in the tach! Same deal when I had a 305 Firebird, 4500 Redline and WOT at exactly the same spot. Since you apparently have the correct governor then it is possible that someone made changes inside the tranny or there is a problem either with calibration (TV Limit Valve most likely) or there is a leak in the governor circuit (Bore wear?) making the pressure unstable.

Well, the trans has had at least 1 rebuild, so I suppose that it could have been changed internally.

Just for a bit of useless trivia that you may be interrested in, here are some different redline numbers off the top of my head:

85 TPI motors redlined at 5500, yellow at 5000.

All peanut-cammed TPI motors redlined at 5,000 and yellow at 4,500.

Most (I believe all) 2.8 multiport cars redlined at 6,000 yellow at 5,500.
