1979 Corvette 4 speed question for a friend.
The car is a 4 speed and I'm sure it's the original tranny. The problem is, when it's in 2nd gear and you let off the gas it pops out of gear almost all the time. Can anyone tell me why? He wants me to look at it cause I work on cars all the time but I have no experience with 4 speeds. Thanks for any help.

It needs the 1-2 synchronizer "sleeve". That is usually a result of a driver that lets out on the clutch when shifting before the trans is all the way in gear, which wears out the splines on the sleeve.
Basically, it needs a reguild. It's a Warner T-10, IMHO an excellent trans, I've rebuilt dozens of them over the years. They're not particularly hard to renew. You'd need a small parts kit which has all the bearings and seals and bushings and stuff like that in it, the one sleeve, maybe a clutch gear bearing retainer, and I'd recommend replacing all 6 keys in it. The synchro blocking rings are probably OK, they don't usually wear out. It takes about 3 hours to tear one down, clean it all up, and put it back together.

I've been to that "temple" also.
Extra suggestions, very inexpensive.
Get new springs to hold the shift forks (located on the side casing).
Rebuild the shifter (VERY EASY!!!!) and get new shifter clips and new bronze bushings (Hurst shifter package-will work on your shifter, too! promise!).
THAT MAY HELP 100%, too.

Right on. Thanks. I'm sure he isn't gonna want to take it out since he just bought it.
I would. I hate anything that's not right.
But if he does, I'd like to give it a shot. Can't be that hard. Might need a manual though.
