I bought this trans from a junkyard, it was out of a station wagon. the trans shifts fine in 1-2, in 2-3 it shifts really nice but 3-4 it slips, it takes about 2 full seconds to shift into OD if I'm above 2500rpm, below that it shifts better, but still on the slow side. is my whole trans toast? I am wondering if i shoudl bother putting in my shiftkit i have sitting around.
so whats wrong with my OD shifting?
thanks

First things first: To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the D button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting. Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal floored, press the D button and pull the cable back as hard as you can and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.
If it isn't better after that you could have a problem with the band, although it is used in second too, only with a different Servo. Or you could have a problem with the Servo seal (it is in the cover) or perhaps a bad accumulator piston. I only recommend installing a Shift Kit (is it a true Shift Kit, I.E., TransGo?) if the tranny HOLDS in all gears and the fluid isn't too bad. If it does and it is a TransGo then I would suggest installing it. Let us know what happens.
