shattered spider gears

does anyone know why this would happen, i was driving last night at 1 in the morning, turned a corner and heard a loud bang in my rear end, then about 30 min later went around another corner and i heard an even louder bang and lost all power to the wheels, thought it was my tranny but when i jacked it up, i could not move rear end. I took off the cover and the spider gears were in there in pieces,(the two small gears not the big ones). I have a hard shifting shift kit and was doing burnouts in the school parking lot(what... it was my last day)so why would this happen???

Hmmm... burnouts..... one-wheel-peel rear end... spider gears trashed.... can't begin to imagine. You'd think that those burnouts should have healed whatever stress the grandmother that owned the car originally might have put on it puttering to church.

Seriously, I suspect that the 2 things might be related. The spider gears are 2 little itty bitty things, that when one wheel is spinning and the other sitting still, have to turn at an RPM that is twice the RPM that an axle would turn at if you were driving down the road at whatever speed the speedo was showing. i.e, your speedo was showing 70, your spider gears were taking full engine power at 140 MPH. It'll trash them every time.

They just wear out over time. At around 120000 miles I pulled my 82 rear-end apart and everything looked perfect, except the spider gears. They were razor sharp on the edges. A two wheeled burnout doesn't mean both tires are spinning at the same speed. When you have any difference in speed, the spiders gears start working.
