strange rear end

Camaro's rear end puzzles me. I've had both back wheels off the ground before and did the spin test on it, it seemed to be an open rear end, but while I was doing the spin test I could jerk the wheel while it was moving and it would clunk and both wheels would spin the same way then.

That was last summer, I havn't really drove that car much since I've had it. Today I was backing up through the yard when I got to a bumpy place. It started to spin one wheel. Well I let off and tried again, it still spun, but then I pushed down on the gas just a little more and I heard a clunk and both wheels started spinning.

So what's the deal with that car? Is the rear end broke?

What you have there is an Eaton Locker rear end. The clutches engage when there is about a 100 rpm difference between the 2 rear wheels. Before that, it acts just like an open rear. When it's up on jack stands, start turning one rear wheel faster and faster and at some point you will see. The trouble with those is that when they wear out, they engage suddenly, possiblly kicking out the rear end, or breaking something. I broke mine at the drags. Don't know what happened first, but a whole mess of stuff broke, including the spider gears and the carrier. That's why I now have a Torsen.

I agree. It's a factory locker. Although it will lock up when one tire starts to spin, the locks are not very strong. They're designed to give better traction in mud and snow but are not very strong for drag racing. A posi or torsen diff is a better shoice.

I know the rear axle isn't factory. The RPO's on my car say it came with rear disk, but sometime before I got it the car got a rear drum axle on it.

I was thinking it could be a locker. When I checked the rear end grease it looked brand new. Is there any way to tell what I have for sure without taking the cover off? I'm pretty sure it's a locker though.
