Tranny started free reving in the middle of a pass!!

Anyone know what this might be?
Its a 700-R4 and its built very strong, but i cant give you all the details.
I was making a nitrous pass and all of a sudden near the top of 2nd gear, the trans just started free reving like it went into neutral.
I got out of the gas and back in it, but it still free reved, so I put it in neutral manually and back into drive and it started to go under its own power again.
Now when I am driving down the road and I manually down shift into 3rd, 2nd, 1st...any gear from OD....its like its in neutral untill I rev the motor up to the point where it normally would be in that gear at that speed...then it grabs and goes.
If i floor the gas while the shifter is in OD it will downshift on its own.....it only does it if i manually downshift the car.
TV cable is fine, trans temp has not changed and runs the same.....Trans still doesnt slip and everything seems to be fine besides the afore mentioned.
Anyone have any idea what this could be?

I can only guess but whatever the problem is, it'll need to be taken apart and inspected.
You might pull the pan and check the boost valve and int/rev valve before tearing it down. These valves are accessed from the bottom of the pump inside the pan. Sounds one may be stuck or worn.

If there is no engine braking in 3,2 or 1 then your overrun clutches are not working. As far as slipping at higher throttle you Forwards may be close to toast.

What would it cost for part to fix the over run clutches? and what all is involved?
I havent ran the car on spray and slicks since it did that so i cant say whether it will do it again.
i sprayed the car on the freeway on stret tires and been driving it and it hasnt done it again.
Ive been thinking i might have run over some fluid on the track and my tires spun and it threw the trans into "neutral"
before, if i downshifted at to fast of a speed which would cause the motor to rev too high, it would go into a neutral state.

Well if you think that was it and it isn't doing it now, maybe you are right. If you go into the tranny you will definately find more than that anyhow. That is just what seemed to match your problem.

I agree with transfixleo on this one. If it happens again, check overrun clutches or the input sprag.
