trying to find out what I have...
Hi, I am new to the board here, but have looked on here years ago for some advise to my other 3rd gen. I have a '92 RS 5.0 with a different rear end in it and I am trying to seek the knowledge of, well, knowledgable camaro/firebird people.
The car was originally equipped with the single piston front calipers and drum rear brakes. Someone before the previous owner (friend) swapped the rear end out with something that I don't know. Here is what I know about it:
- Has opposing sided caliper mounts (pass side in front, drivers side in rear)
- 9-bolt pan
- Could not find an i.d. tag, but only found 'BorgXWarner' stamped near the front of the housing
- Has a high ratio gear (3:90 or 4:11 perhaps)
- Has standard camaro bolt pattern
My dad said he believes it's out of an 80's Trans Am and/or that it's a DANA rear end.
My reason for wanting to know what it's out of (for the curious) is for 1 i'd like to know what is in my own vehicle, and 2, whoever swapped the rear end didn't finish the job with brakes! No one ever bothered to change out the neccesary components to convert drum to disc brakes, so I would like to know what car I need to look at for the proper brake materials such as proportioners and master cylinders. Also if somone might have a better alternative to hooking this system up since the front pads are the same a the rears, I don't want to have the rears lock up and the fronts not doing anything, etc.
I know about the search tool by the way, I just really didn't know what to look for since I don't know exactly what I have without cracking the pan open, so go easy on me...!

It's not the Dana. You already found out it's the Borg-Warner 9-bolt, sometimes called the australian axle. It came out on the '85 TransAm, the IROC-Z got it for 1987, and it was used into 1990. The lowest ratio GM installed was either 3.45:1 or possibly 3.70:1 in some L69/T5 cars.
