Rear Differential stuff.

I was getting my car inspected today, and they recommended that at somepoint in time I replace the rear diff. cover.

They also told me that there is a whine in the rear diff. when on the throttle.

Is the whine because of the leaky cover? Or do I need a rear differential?

What steps should I go about taking to do this myself. Or should I have a garage to do it?

Also, they told me there is a vibration when braking, any thoughts on what that would be?

Thanks

If the cover leaks, there may be no gear oil in the diff. I'd check that first. This is something you can do:

The rotors could easily be warped.

Thanks for the reply. I will try this out, I do not hear the whine but the guy inspecting the car claimed he heard one.

Just don't take it back to the place that did the inspection. Check & change flulid and replace the cover gasket. Unless the cover was damaged they are not a wear item that needs replaced.

I talked to my father yesterday, (who is probably the best mechanic I know) and thats the exact same thing he told me to do, so I think we will try that out.
