The car in question is a 88 Firebird 305 auto with 130,000 miles. The problem is that my transmission slips when accelerating around town, it goes into gear great hot or cold (D or R) and when cold does not slip at all so do I need a complete rebuild ($1300-1500) or is there a cheaper alternative such as replacing the bands and clutches? Thanks for the help in advance.

With those kind of miles I would suspect an O/H is in order. Generally speaking replacing the Band and Clutches is your basic O/H. What you need to know is if the reasons for there demise will be fixed. IMHO, unless a TransGo Shift Kit or Reprogramming Kit for HD/HP use is installed it isn't really fixed.

So how much should I expect to pay for this type of overhaul on my transmission? I would like to know as much as possible when it comes to what a rebuild or overhaul consist of so my chain will not get jerked. Thanks for the reply transfixleo.

You are probably on the ball park, maybe a little more for custom type work.
