tv cable/govenor
I assumed my TV cable was damaged because there was a lot of slack in it and when adjusting, it didnt seem to want to move very far. Plus my tranny shifts very early, about 4000rpm at WOT. I took my car to a very reputable tranny shop and the guy took it for a test drive with me. He checked out the TV cable, tryed fine tuning it a bit while driving and says its fine and that my govenor probably needs to be adjusted. He says its time consuming though because they have to play around with it and let the tranny cool down every time they have to open it up.
Should I take this in and have them do that? Or what would a shift kit do instead? Thanks guys.

I guess it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. With TV set to max as I described to you, you have @4000 WOT shifts right? If you want to raise them you will have to go to lighter secondary weights in your govenor and then fine tune the springs to go along with it. You will be able to get up to @5500 RPM. In fact you can buy a governor for a Vette and use that instead. Does your engine pull that high? I had a 305/4BBL Firebird that started to flatten out at 4000 and would shift (Orange line on tach) right at 4500RPM. It would have done me no good to go any higher with this car so I left it alone, even though I know exactly what to do with it, it is more important to get what the engine wants than what we would like. I would try manually holding it and seeing what kind of real power curve you have, not what RPM you can get but where it is still pulling. You do not want to go any higher than that RPM.
As for a Shift Kit, it's purpose ( a TRUE Shift Kit, IE, TransGo) is to increase the life of your tranny by correcting the primary designed in causes of complaints and failures. Do not confuse this with some Bang Kit that people mistakenly call a Shift Kit.
