2:77 10 bolt posi question.
2:77 10 bolt posi question.
Can I swap anything from this rear to my 3:42 rear? Such as the posi unit. A friend has 2 rears, one 9 bolt and one 10 bolt but they both have 2:77's in them. Thanks.

There is no 2.77 10-bolt. It might be a 2.73 though.
Absolutely nothing internal will interchange between the 10-bolt and the 9-bolt. Not one single piece, IIRC not even the cover bolts.
You cannot swap a carrier that fits 2.73 gears into a rear with 3.42 gears, unless the 3.42 gears are the special ones for going onto a 2-series carrier. The reason is that as the gear ratio changes, the relative diameter of the gears changes the exact same amount; since the ring gears are all the same diamter (7.6" or whatever it is) as the ratio number increases, the pinion gets smaller. So, the ring gear has to get thicker and thicker as the ratio increases. At some point in the range of ratios, the factory moves the flange on the carrier where the ring gear mounts, over toward the pinion; and then the lowest numbered ring gear in that series is thin once again, and proceeds to become thicker as the ratio is increased further. In the 10-bolt, this step is between 3.08 and 3.23; 3.08 down ar ereferred to as "2-series", and 3.23 up as "3-series".
So, it's highly unlikely that you can use a posi that fits a 2.73, in a rear with a 3.42.
