First off, it's a flexplate. Flywheels are for manual transmissions.

Is the new engine a 2pc or a 1pc rear main? 86 was a 1pc IIRC. That said the old one should be fine if the new engine is a 1pc rear main also. If he "has" to have a new one there is a simple way to tell them apart. 153 teeth = 12 3/4" 168 teeth = 14". Alternativly look at the starter bolt pattern, if the bolts are diaganol it's a 168, if they are straight across then, most likely it's a 153, could be a 168.

Different things almost completely, not anywhere near interchangable, and the flywheel costs about 4 times as much.

I'm not real sure what size he has right now. I have a 5-speed, so I know mine is the 153. The slushbox on the other hand IIRC can use either one. The best way to tell is look at the bolts, they should clue you in.

"flywheel flexplate same thing" i was being sarcastic lol

anyway, thanks, ill look at the bolt pattern and see what it has, but should i be using the same flexplate style? it has the 1 pc seal right now, and im going to the older 2 pc design, so is it safe to use the same style on the old motor?

You will have to get a new one. The bolt pattern is different between the two so it will not bolt up. Other then that just get one the same size as the one you have now.
