Anybody heard of a 2.29 gear ratio in a mid 80's monty carlo? Raced some kid and killed him. He asked me what gears i had told him 2.73 so he said he had 2.29's. I've never heard of them, is he just pulling my leg?

 

My Wife had an '86 Bonneville that had them too. The thing is that it would spin the tires if you floored it and it only had a 4.3L.

Damn rights that's weird. I thought my 2.73's were bad but those's must just suck bad.

 

What year Monte Carlo's came with 2:29's
this kid at college wants to race me, he says he has a 350, how many Carlo's came with 350's. Right now I don't want to race anyone until I can get my tranny looked at, but if he has 2:29's I think I can take him.

No they didnt put 350's in mid 80's mony carlos, and yes there is a 2.29 gear set. i had one in my 82 regal. i put a 350 in it, intake, headers, carb. i got the thing up to 140. geeezz. it still ran 10 flat in the 1/8, which is like 15 something in the quarter, i always wanted to get 3.42 for it, i think it would have dropped a half second or better off my times in the 1/8. taking off wasnt very exciting, but racing from 80-110 was pretty cool. damn GM and their engineers.

The tranny in my Wife's car was a TH200C so even though it was a 2.29 (I couldn't believe it either) the lower first gear of the 200 (2.74 compared to a 2.54 in a 350) gave it a little more pep. What suprised me was how strong it felt when you stepped on it! That little 4.3 realy pulled strong.

 

I think i have the same gear ratio in my 80 lemans and monte carlo,I have overdrive transmissions attached to both of them 200r4 and 700r4.One of them have a 406 tpi sbc the other has a 4.8 ls vortec in it.so needless to say the outcome will be interesting.

 

It probably didnt have an overdrive either. Thats Y the super high gears

 

yea my monte and lemans both came with that transmission.

 

My 86 Monte Carlo also came with the little metric 200 3spd,2.29gears, and the 4.3.
