blown torque convertor

ok, was told today that my torque convertor is bad, I believe it. What is involved in replacing the TC, does the tranny have to come out? Also my mechanic is recomending a rebuild of the transmission, (700r4 out of an 87 iroc w/90,000 miles) he said that when a convertor goes, it most likely threw **** all over inside the tranny. Should I have my tranny rebuilt? and how much does that usually run. I think the warranty on the rebuild was going to be 1yr. THanks guys!

Yes... the converter will spew into the transmission. You need to have it done too.

I thought so, but I wasn't sure. From what I understand, the TC is filled with tranny fluid that is circulated throughout the transmission, so when the convertor goes, it contaminated the fluid, which inturn, is also circulated throughout the transmission, Is that correct? Has anyone had thier 700r4 rebuilt, or does any one who rebuilds them know how much this usually costs? Any thing extra I should have him do to make it stronger or more functional. Thanks!!
