Identify early or late 700r4

Hi guys!

Is it possible to distinguish between an 700 tranny made before -87 and one made after 87 without taking it apart? I've heard that the models after 87 are better.

Best regards, Fredrik

Look for a tag on the unit with a bunch of numbers and letters. There will be a larger number and two or three letters. The one with the three letters will be a later unit.

Look at the fluid flow plugs on the right side. The newer ones had only one and the older ones had three, not absolutely positive. My 92 had one and a friend had three on his 700 out of his mid 80s pickup two wheel drive.
