if you don't have the money to pay someone you most likely don't have the money for any tools you'll need. transmissions aren't like working on space ships but their is a lot to mess up if you don't know and the 700r4 is one of the trickier ones to do.

Hit a parts store (or http://www.haynes.com ) and pick up the Haynes manual called "GM Transmission Overhaul". Read through the chapter on the 700r4, that'll give you a good idea of what's required.

I recently paid someone $695 to do mine in my Firebird.
I am going to tackle the one on my S-10 Blazer, tho.
BUT, if you DO NOT have access to tools, don't do it. Pay someone & THEY will warranty the work.
Ask for shop suggestions.
BUT DO NOT change FLUID! You'll loose the tranny, right away.
I know, I did that & lost my tranny.
But, in return I got a better tranny & cleaner hands!
Bite the bullet.
