Torque Converter up-down play?

This is in continuation of my other post where I had a huge fluid leak from the front area of a 700r4. I took it off the engine today and With the converter installed to the transmission, there it alot of play if you move the converter up and down. I had suspected that the front seal was bad. Would this confirm it? The seal doesnt look bad but I dont really know what I'm looking for. Any ideas on this or other things i should look at to diagnose. What I'd like to do is if the seal is bad, replace it and re-install the tranny and see if it is toadted inside or if its still ok.

Thanks

I would listen to transfixleo on his replies to that post. It sounds like your pump bushing either failed or walked out, I had one walk out on a turbo 350 and the fluid started a small fire under my car, if your converter wobbles remove the pump and inspect/replace the bushing. It cost me under $5 in parts Plus $6 in shipping from carparts.com for a bushing, pump gasket, and seal. I built the trans my self, I staked the bushing in place second time around.

Excessive play will cause the seal to leak in short time so don't bother putting it back in the car like that.

Ok, I guess I'll go up to the auto parts store and see what books they have there. I dont have a very good grasp about how everything goes togther in the pump assembly, but i hope the book will clear that up for me. If I find major problems in the transmission, what are peoples opinions on me doing a complete rebuild myself on this thing? I really dont want to have to buy a lot of extra tools and stuff like that. How much would a stock rebuild kit cost?

Thanks
