5'th gear has left the building WCT5

after some comparative driving a month or so ago, my fifth gear decided to leave me. Is it very difficult to rebuild manual T's? Has anyone had the honor of cracking one of these open? It's an 89 bird, swapped out my 305 for the zz4, and at around 112 mph and hard pressed, the t5 gave up. I had to kick his *** in 4'th. It sounds like my slave cylinder is rotting out, so I figure while I'm changing the clutch I might as well do this too. thanks for any help!

What do you mean it left you? Are you getting a grinding noise? Or is 5th gear freewheeling? I had a problem with mine, where the snap ring for 5th gear came off, so the gear walked off the shaft. I opened it up, replaced the snap ring with a new one, and the problem was fixed.

If you have the time and right tools, it shouldn't be too dificult. You may have to lift the engine to pull the tranny out... If you can get one from the junk yard you can pull out the 5th gear from a donar tranny and swap it in, or you could order the part OEM. Once you pull the tranny and open it up you should find the problem, or it should find you... buy a Chiltons or Haynes or Both manuals, they should be able to walk you through it...
