hi, i have a 1985 camaro with open rear end or one legger,,i just got a posi carrier and checked all the specs and is ready to install...i want to keep my gears and install the ring gear on this carrier,,basically remove the spider gears and install the pinion gear on this carrier...my question is ..can i do this myself?..i am very good with my hands and do all the rest of the reapairs on my camaro..it is just a question of adjustment between the pinion and ring gear once i put it back in...any instructions that can help on how to go about it?....thanks in advance,,,

yea and no
someone that knows what they are doing can do it with gear marking paint and get it perfect
otherwise you need to have proper rear end tools, and KNOW how it should go in
I HIGHLY RECOMEND YOU TAKE IT SOMEWHERE

Re: rear end posi installation help
Changing a ring gear onto a different carrier (posi) isn't that hard but without some knowledge, experience and a few special tools, it can be difficult or impossible to do properly. As mentioned above, have a shop do it properly the first time.
Technically, ring gear bolts need to be torqued. I think the 10 bolt diff uses LH thread ring gear bolts. Backlash needs to be checked with a dial gauge and adjusted by changing the shims on the side bearings. Bearing caps need to be torqued. Since you're not changing the pinion, gear pattern should remain the same as long as the proper backlash is obtained but it still needs to be checked. Normally the shims you take out on each side go back on the same sides.
Getting the new carrier and shims into the diff housing is difficult because the easiest way to get it in with the side shims is with a case spreader.
While the axles are out, the axle seals should be changed and maybe bearings if they look bad although most people don't change them.

Re: rear end posi installation help
Read this. It covers the installation. This was for the 8.5 10 bolt, but it's pretty much the same for the 7.5 10 bolt too.
