torque converter

I just put a new engine in my '85 camaro, and I was trying to hook up the torque converter. I tried to pull it up to the flexplate, and it stops about 1/8 inch from it. It sounds like it's bottoming out in the crank where the pilot(?) goes in. Could I have put it on backwards or something? Please help!

If your 'new engine' came out of a car with a manual tranny, possibly you need to remove the pilot bushing from the end of the crank.

It's a '86 engine and was in a '76 Blazer with a Th350. I'm going to pull the tranny back a little and see of anything is stuck in the pilot bushing hole in the crank.

I took the trans out of the car, and I can see a worn place around the nose of the torque converter where I was running the engine, the nose of the converter is cone-shaped with the big part toward the engne. Does this sound right? I don't know that much about it. Thanks for the help...
