is there a difference in strength? or anything

Negative, the strength only increases when you move up to a 1988+ "world class" T5 transmission.

really? hmmm ive had a couple of friends now with 84 T5s all having trouble with 5th gear going in them...didnt know if this was some defect for that year or what...

Hmn, 5th gear failures are not very common from my experience. What are they running in them for fluid?
