Carrier Question

In a ten bolt rearend, what is the difference between a 2 series carrier and a 3 series carrier?

Transmission: 700r4
2 series is thinner(3.08 and lower numeric gear ratio) and 3 series is thicker(3.23 and higher numeric ratio). It's done because as the gear ratio gets smaller the pinion gear gets bigger and the ring gear needs to be moved over to align correctly.
