need new rear axle...
okay, whats all involved with a new rear axle? i recently got cut off in the rain and i tried to get out of the way but my car slipped and went from under me and my left tire left the car going 40mph while still keeping the disc brake in tact with it. i figured to spend the money on the engine this winter while it was away, but not anymore. i was hoping to make the rear a lot stronger...how much would a new rear axle and used one cost, preferably a 9 bolt ford with 3.7X or a chevy 12 bolt??? is it easy to do the swap or should i do something else, i want it to be able to handle some 2500rpm launches when im done with her on some drag radials. This is all in prepartion for a ZZ4 crate motor so I say 400-500 lbs/ft of torque just to be safe?

Will this be too much money? I don't want to spend over $1500 for the stuff and am thinking of a 4th Gen rear (6spd) after reading what a few guys have posted. Where can I find a 4th gen 6spd rear? The only junkyard around here is one with like 83 berlinettas, they are REALLY old camaros, not to much of a selection. should i mail order it from another junkyard? and btw, that car musta been really messed up for me to purchase a 4th gen rear and should i really buy it because insurance would pay it if it werent totalled and totalled means teh car was torn to ****. im in chicago area if anyone know anything around here please let me know.

Craig, good to here that you and Ed got the car running again....what was wrong? Bad luck about the accident though....dont tell Ed he will kick your a s s, hehehehehe!!!! Well anyway here is a link to SLP's DANA 44 rear axle for $1700. Its real strong and will hold up to a ZZ4:
http://www.slponline.com/view_produc...RTNUMBER=64000
You can get it in 3.73:1 or 4.09:1 if you like but it comes with 3.54:1 ratio.
If you do get a 4th gen axle your rear tires will be recessed about 2 inches on each side and may rub and it still is just a 10bolt so it will break with that much power.

Please don't post incorrect information. Many people will actually take your word on this kind of information as being correct.
There is also no way in hell, unless he is a complete jacka$$ of a driver, that he is going to break a 10 bolt axle with his 305 even if it is a 7.5" one. He could bolt 100 more HP onto that car and still be fine with a 10 bolt. The only time he might run into problems with a 7.5" 10 bolt is if he gets a lot more power and puts very sticky (ie slicks or DOT stickys) tires on it and drops the clutch from high rpm at the strip. At that point with a manual transmission, he might break an axle or a gear with all of the grip he will have. If he did all of the improvements to a 7.5" 10 bolt (ie hardened axles, girdle, stud kit, welded axle tubes, etc....) it would be strong enough to put him into the 11s or more. There are plenty of 4th gen cars running 11s and even 10s with a beefed up 7.5" 10 bolt. Hell, even a stock LS1 car can hit high 12s with a bone stock 7.5" 10 bolt! I personally know a guy with a turbo'ed 383 LT1 4th gen with nothing more than Moser axles and a girdle on his 7.5" 10 bolt. His car runs easy 10s and is still a 6 speed! He actually snapped a stock torque arm one time......
Just to clearify, I am not saying a 7.5" 10 bolt is WELL suited for drag racing, and even when upgraded it will not last as long as other options, but it will work and is a lot stronger than most people think (and a lot cheaper than buying an aftermarket axle).

$225 Moser axles will be plenty for a ZZ4. The SLP Zexel OEM Posi should be fine too according to Zexels website. http://www.moserengineering.com/

I wouldn't put the 4th gen rear in. Not much different than ours other than the zexel posi and the brakes.
