Shifting trouble

I've got a 1992 Camaro RS that I'm having some trouble with. I'm not great with cars, as this is my first one. It is parked in my driveway and yesterday when I tried to leave it wouldn't go into gear. The shifter is very loose and moves back in forth showing it is going to other gears, yet it doesn't. When I put it in reverse the tail lights show it is in fact in reverse, but it isn't engaging with the transmission. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong? If so could you explain how to fix it? Diagrams and pictures would help as I'm not to familiar with working on cars.
Thanks...
Oh and it isn't the stock shifter. The person that owned it before me but a BME slap shifter on it.

Re: Shifting trouble

Sounds like the shift cable broke. Look under the car on the left side of the transmission and see if the cable has come detached from the manual lever on the side of the case. If that connection is good you will have to take apart the shifter inside the car and see if thecable broke from that end.
