700r4 help please

I have been having issues with my 700r4 ever since I installed it 2000 miles ago. It is a rebuilt unit from Moster Trans. I bought it 5 years ago and it sit in the plastic shipping create for 3 years. ( the car project went on hold well we built our new house) So 2 years ago I put it in the car with a new 383 small block. I drove the car around 500 or so miles to break the engine in and look things over for leaks and what not. I never pushed anything hard just short bursts here and there. At that time the trans seemed to shift into 4th quickly. I was in 4th by 40 mph. So when I did start to push it I noticed the car would not down shift once it was in 4th gear. I have played with the tv cable a millon times and had to local trans shops look at it and they say it is OK. They both are older guys who think the car runs good. One guy told me to change the govenor so I put the stock one in out of the stock trans. Now it down shifts from 4th if you push the gas at all hard. It also takes a long time to shift into 4th even if you are just driving along. If you really nail it hard it will down shift and rev up to the rev limiter in 3rd and not shift until you let off the gas. The car is a toy for me and not driven much at all but I do want to straighten it out. I have had people tell me a value may be stuck or somting from the trans sitting in storage so long. What do you think I sould do? I also had one of the trans guys tell me the govenor needs to be set at .015 clearance from the cap. Is that so? Any input is welcome. It is hard to belive no shops here in upstate NY will work on a high performance car. Thanks Guys

Re: 700r4 help please

you haven't told us what car it's in. I'm assuming it's a 1989 ford corwn vic with a chevy motor custom installed in it with brackets that don't match for the t.v...
get my point? you'll never get a t.v. cable adjusted properly if you don't understand that the correct parts need purchased/stolen/borrowed/etc. and adjusted properly...
you bought a monster and payed a lot of money I'm sure, so why modify it without talking to them and letting them know you'll do everything you can to make their trans perform. You are risking burning the thing up, gladly not at their expense at this point. My2cents-I had a customer this week tell me he forgot to add oil to the trans during install and had to ask me if I would take care of it for him after he ruined it. Make sense?

Re: 700r4 help please

Well your right. The car is an 89 firebird GTA with a 383 stroker and 3:27 rear end gears. I did call Monster twice and both times he said it was the TV cable. After the first time I took it to the locall trans shop and he said the tv cable was adjusted fine. He has been in bussiness over 30 years. A few weeks ago I took it to another shop and he said the tv cable was fine and he also checked the fuild level and said that looked good to him. He thoght something may be sticking or something. I have read many posts complaining about monster trans. I hope I am not one of them.

Re: 700r4 help please

What governor was in it? And what governor did you replace it with? Start with the TV cable being adjusted properly. It should be tight at WOT, and if there is any play it should be no more than a 1/16". You DO NOT solve this playing with the TV cable, you can destroy it. If the governor shifts where you want it at WOT, then take the governor out and remove the lighter (the weaker of the two springs) out of the governor. Re-install it and see what happens. Governor to cover clearance, should be about .040" - .060". It is not critical, but should not be to tight. In your case I would not concern yourself with it now, as the tail housing needs to be off to do this right. When installing the governor cover you should never hit the cover in the middle to install it, just on the outside circle of the cover. Taking out the weaker of the two springs can make it downshift easier (if this is the right governor to start with) and have the part throttle shifts slightly later. Do you know how to tell the differences in the governors? Let us know what happens here. Dana

Re: 700r4 help please

The govenor in the car right now is the factory one out of the stock trans.which was in the car. The govenor I took out is the one monster had installed. Both look the same as far as both have a green gear and both look the same but one has lighter springs and different wieghts which can be seen by eye. I do not know anything other than that. I have been told that all stock govenors in 5.7 cars should make the car shift at about 5500 rpms. Both my other firebirds I had did shifted at WOT at just about 5500 rpms. I never drove this car until the motor and trans where changed because it had a blown engine when I bought it. So I must asume the trans was stock. I bought it from the original owner who said he never touched the car as far as mods. When I said I played around with the TV cable I met that I adjusted it several times as I read in books and on posts. Thats why I let trans shops look at it to see if I where doing it correctly and they both said it was done correctly.
