"Play" in the Drivetrain

I drove my 88 IROC (All stock L98/700R4/Al Driveshaft/2.77 posi) on a road racing course on Saturday. About halfway through the day, I noticed that when I move the shifter into a "moving" gear (drive, reverse) there is a clunk/jerk in the drivetrain as if something has slop and putting it into gear tightens it up.

Understand that I often had to slam the car into second gear when heading into a turn and there is no way to soften the blow to the drivetrain (no heel/toe, etc).

I suppose it could be anything from the tranny through the rear end. Is there a known weak point in this layout? In what order should I do my search? Thanks.

When road racing an automatic, you can try a left foot braking technique. With your right foot on the gas, you can sort of help the engine match revs, the same concept as heel toeing a manual.

As for your clunking, check the driveshaft at the axle, and keep in mind, some of this slop is normal.

Thanks. I'll have a look.

Maybe I should also try the automatic transmission of heel-n-toe. I know I'm tearing the old girl up... ...but it's so fun!
