Torque dribble

OK, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I found my tranny problem. When I bring the engine up to 3500 rpms the car chokes and doesn't go anywhere and a loud grinding noise can be heard. Its not the drive shaft or any of the gears as the car works fine as long as it stays out of the 3500 rpm zone. I think its the torque convertor? I thought that if that breaks it takes everything else with it? Anyone else have this or know of someone who had this problem? Could use the help, thanks.
