700R4
700R4
ok my friend has a trans am and he just took the 700R4 out and sold it to me. not sure if its original tranny because engine had been swapped before he got it. he put a thm350 in the car instead of the 700
he dropped the 700 because he said it was slipping in 3rd gear. he just had it rebuilt with ray bestos clutches and it still slipped. he did not have the lockup for the torque convertor hooked up because he is running non cc carb and non cc dist.
also the bracket for his TV cable was mutilated...and i thought that maybe with a new tv cable and bracket...the transmission would be fine.
my question is what would make it slip in 3rd gear? could a mis-adjusted tv cable and the tcc not hooked up to anything cause that?

ok i jumped the gun on this topic. did a little search and it seems from what I have read, my friend not having the TV cable adjusted properly(most likely because of his jacked up TV bracket) he has burnt the 3-4 clutch pack up. Transmission needs rebuilt again. Took the listing off of pro-built.net for the 700R4 heavy duty rebuild kit that costs $535 and brought it to the man who rebuilt my turbo 350. He says he can get all the parts, but will use Ray Bestos clutches. Price including labor to be about $400 for the rebuild.

thats a decent price, I paid a about a grand to have my 700r4 rebuilt, but that included the stall, corvette servo, and B&M stage 2 shift kit.
If it was just rebuilt don't pay for a complete rebuild kit and labor, buy the 3-4 clutches, about 30 dollars and do them only. My 700 had 205,000 miles on it and only needed 3-4 clutches, bearings and seals. The 3-4 clutches are right in the front of the transmission and are easy to get to. If you pulled out the tranny and brought it to me I would charge about 50-75 dollars because that is a simple job. The Corvette servo is just larger diameter for a firmer 1-2 shift and you probably don't need it unless you race. Good luck!!
