yea you can guess after 2 rebuild each with about 7-9k on them and i lose 3 and 4 so im like super, its suspose to be a performance built trans with all high end performance parts and this is the 3rd time its went out in 2 years 1st time was my own faught i let it get low on fluid, other 2 times its part failures, what in the heck is causing the same problem 2 other times, that were not due to low fluid, btw, i got a trans cooler and a derale cooling pan on it to so its not a heat issue

im thinking a stick of TNT will fix the problem, but i really dont want all the hassle of swaping to a manual 5 or 6 speed

any help PLEASE

I have some experience with the 4L60E which is very similar to the 700-R4 (pushing electronics aside).

You say that you rebuilt it 2 times already?? And what exactly are you meaning by rebuilt? Just because you switch out parts, doesn't mean it will fix a problem. (btw..if it's low on fluid you'll know..usually its the torque converter that just goes out because it has no fluid to push the fins).

You say you lost 3 and 4? Is it not shifting into those gears, or is it not locking up?

it will lock up if i manual jump the terminals to lock it up, or it will also lock up by its self when the computer tells it to, its full of fluid, the fluid is nice clean red and not burnt smelling, i havent lost 3 & 4 yet but it will with in a few more miles, now its slipping when you give it over 1/4 throttle , then it will grab, but its doing the same thing it did last time, and the time before that when it was run low on fluid, when it goes 100% out it slips totaly after 2nd, its like shifting into N

as for the rebuilds they were full on rebuilds using all 100% performace or racing parts

im coming up on the 3rd rebuild in no more than 20k miles, the car is drove hard some of the time but not near as hard as many others drive, most of the time is normal driving

im thinking the shift kit is to much for the trans, its a bad you know what shift kit, it will bark the tires going into 2nd when you get on it

all i know is im times 1,000,000 now, i have pulled this trans to much now and for all the $$$$$$$ i have put in it, i could of got a new 6speed manual and paid someone to put it in, money dont grow on trees (or atleast it dont in my yard ) and this is really getting old now

well its deff your 3/4 clutches. and a good firm shift kit shouldnt just burn up gears like that. i no i bark tires all the time goin into 2nd. i even do it at the track . and its never hurt a thing. id recomend zpack clutches thats whats in mine. hook up a pressure make sure you have the right amount of line pressure going into third.

i think it has a alto kit for the clutchs, but this crap is stupid, to lose 2 trans with only 7 - 10k on each

It's not going to be your clutches themselves, unless they were installed improperly with the steels.

When I took out my input drum, we tested the pistons in the clutch packs by just an air compressor. They should hold the pressure and not leak it out. Just because you are slipping in the 3-4 clutch packs, doesn't mean it's the actual clutches. I would look at the stator and the pump to see if you have some leaks. And then I would check out the teflon o rings on the input shaft. You should be able to "feel" them when you run your fingers across them. That way when the torque converter slides on the shaft, it will have 3 firm "clunks."

But look at the drum that houses all the forward clutches, coast clutches, and 3-4. With the snap ring in, there should be very little "play" in between all the clutches and steels. That way when the piston arms apply, they won't have to extend all that far.

With a hard 1 to 2 shift, it's really hardest on the sprag..but if you have a high-performance one, it should be fine (that's another thing to check i.e. the sprag should spin only one way). Oh and btw...a hard 1 to 2 shift isn't going to have an effect on the 3-4 clutches because the piston shouldn't be applying them anyway when you're in 2nd gear!

So tell me...With all this money you're dumping in it, doesn't it have a warranty?

yea this time its covered, but it was bench built, so i got to remove it, take it up there etc etc

but strang thing, it acted fine today, slipped once and then acted fine, but now in first gear it feels like i got the brakes on when i take off, same in reverce to and when you rev it up in P or N it sound like a supercharger under the car at the trans, make the think TQ converter problem now

im lost, and i dont want to pull it again if its something i can fix in the car

Hmm...well if you're doing it yourself, I sure hope you put it back on right. You have to make sure the bell housing meets flush with the engine. Usually torque converters don't go out. And torque converters don't just intermittently work.

As far as it seeming like the brakes are on...your car should just naturally move when it's in gear and idling.

Removing my transmission once, I would remove it again in a heartbeat because now I know everything that needs to come undone. It's real nice having a tranny jack and the super long extension. And on top of that, a long garage with carpet.

Re: 700 keeps losing 3 and 4 after 2 rebuilds
yea its put back on right, and lucky i got the "transmission extention" for my tools, got shop air, and a home made trans jack pad

all i know is whatever happened today, it now sounds like a supercharger in park, R and 1 its like the brakes are on, when you push the gas, and when you let off, it stops like its the brakes are on, in 2,3,4 its like the brakes are on when you gas it but rolls when you let off, in N its will drift foward, would do the same in P if the park lock thingy wasn't engaged

soooooo im lost now, i have no clue what the heck is going on now

Well in that case, I wonder now if you band is screwed up. The band basically goes over the input drum. If it's not releasing, it shouldn't be moving at all.

Re: 700 keeps losing 3 and 4 after 2 rebuilds
just took it down the street, same as yesterday ..... just a little update, that whine that sounds like a super charger, well it spools down when you cut the car off kinda like how a turbo spools down when you kill the engine......

all this talk of superchargers and turbos makes me want to get one
