700R4 Maintenance
I just rolled over the 190k mark on my 89RS. I've been told and read several places that the 700R4 likes to die at 200k.
So I was wondering, what is it that goes out in the trans and can it be easily and/or cheaply fixed? What is typical for a trans failure and what is worst case scenario?
I've read several threads about losing a gear or working on different items in the trans, but never have I seen one where they talked about "rebuiling" or repairing one that had wore out AFAIK.
Thanks

Re: 700R4 Maintenance
Replacing anything much inside a tranny means a rebuild - with a rebuild your just removing clutches and plates and replacing them, as over time they wear down and don't make friction with one another any more, thus they "slip", and thus a rebuild. If have to take it apart for any of the clutches, it would be foolish to not replace it all. Typical rebuld runs anywhere from $500 to $1200 - just depends on who and where. Parts prices are basically the same for the good stuff vs the stock stuff.
