from looking at these sites, it looks as if i need to buy a kit and not just the sleeve or am i mistaken?

If you are rebuilding the rear end or replacing the gears then get the it. If you are just replacing the pinion bearings then get a pinion kit. It will have the bearings, crush spacer, pinion seal and pinion nut.
