Detriot Locker

I am currently gathering parts to rebuild the 10 bolt in the rear of my T/A. I already plan on upgrading the shafts and trading the 2.73's to 3.23. It has a posi currently, but the carrier is trashed. I bought the car from a corn field in IL, and have been rebuilding it.

The part I am having trouble with is wether to install a locker or a posi. The ratcheting and bangs don't bug me, but the smooth operation of a posi is nice as well, just not the eventual, inevitable fail.

Anyone out there ever install a detriot locker? I am not a fan of the POS side gear replacement. If I'm going to spend the money, I'd rather go all out on a real locker. On the other hand, has anyone had a posi that worked reliably for more than 20K or so?

Thanks all!!!
Cliff

Re: Detriot Locker

It's always nice to upgrade to something better but your 10 bolt will still be weak. I'd recommend a good posi instead of a locker. The Eaton posi is better than an Auburn.

Re: Detriot Locker

The Eaton Posi has survived in Chevy muscle cars from '65 and up. I have seen them with over 35 years of hard use that were still working very well. The Auburn is junk.

As for the locker, I have a Detroit Locker in my Camaro and it works great. It pops and jerks, but it never slips. As for the Lock Right, I've had one in my truck for over 140,000 miles and I've had no problems with it either. It also pops and jerks, but it works very well.

Ditto, I got a 1975 MP POSI [10 bolt cover, 12 bolt carrier inside]
with around 80,000 miles on it, works and looks like new inside.

Re: Detriot Locker

I am handy with a plasma cutter and mig welder. I have already fabbed a few braces for the tubes and have already fully welded the tubes to the center section. Between the braces adn 33 to 35 spline shafts and a better carrier, it will be about as stong as it can get.

Re: Detriot Locker

I'm running a lock rite myself, and as stated above, it pops and jerks but never slips. One thing though, if you are going to go with a locker you'll have to get another carrier, as they're designed to go into an open carrier.

All the improvements you can do won't change the strength of the tiny ring and pinion. The small teeth will still break off if stressed too hard.

Re: Detriot Locker

I run a True Detroit Locker./trac lock.. it's as smooth as glass on the street.
no Poping or anything.. Love it over all the other Posi's out there.

the thing with the locker is. it will always Lock and clutch type Posi's will slip from time to time.. turning your Hot rod into a 1 tire fryer..even for just a sec..is mo fun.

all you have to remeber is the car has to go strait for 8 to 10 feet for the thing to lock. when turning..(parking lot turns)

so coming out of a turn. like into the water box at a drag strip..
make sure you go strait for 8 to 10 feet..and it will be locked (for sure)

and when turning. from like a red light. when you start to give it gas. you will feel it Push on the drive side that is locked..for just a sec.. till the other side locks...NO Banging .Just smooth lock up..Push..sorta werd...

(THIS IS THE PART YOU MIGHT GET IT TO POP) IF STANDING ON IT IN A TURN. if it comes unlocked.. under power then going back into lock..

But. always there when you want it.

I have ran alot of Diff posi's over the last 25+ years of Hot rodding..ill stick with the Locker..Hands down.

always Buy New.. or from a shop who sets them up..
when you Buy 2nd Hand Hot Rod part's.(Lockers). most of the time your getting somthing they dont want anymore.
a Locker set up right..and not needing to be looked at will always be smooth. when Running. Remember: at one time they came stock in some cars.

So what are you saying, are you using a Truetrac, Detroit Locker or a Trac Lock?

Re: Detriot Locker

A Track Lock is a clutch type limited slip used by Ford and in some GM rear ends. It's not the same as a Detroit Locker.
