Auburn Series 2 or 3 Identity
How do you know you are looking at a specific carrier?? Are there any markings to know for sure??
Also, If you were looking to buy a used one that someone said it was in great shape, how can you tell if it's worn out or not?
Also, I beleive there are re-buildable ones ond NON re-buildable ones, How do you know?
I know, Questions, Questions!!
Thanks in advance!

Re: Auburn Series 2 or 3 Identity
All Auburns are unrebuildable. When they wear out they are scrap metal. The only way that I know of to tell a 2 from a 3 is to set them up on end and measure from the ring gear mounting surface down to the table that it's setting on.

These are Eaton cases for the 12 bolt, but you can see the difference in the height of the ring gear flange from the 2 series on the left to the 4 series on the right.

Re: Auburn Series 2 or 3 Identity
Alrighty then, Now I have a new question. This guy has two Auburn posis, one is the older style where the spyder gears and all are held in place by a large screw cap on one end. The other is held in place with a bolt on cap using 6 or 8 big torx screws. I beleive the later is the newer style? Any preferences??
Re: Auburn Series 2 or 3 Identity
The old Auburn used a 2 piece case that was bolted together with about 8 bolts. The new ones are a one piece case with a screw in cap on the right side. There is a dowel pin that holds it in place to keep it from unscrewing. Other than the case design there is little difference in them.

This is one half of an old Auburn.
