I believe the TPI cables were different than the TBI or carb cables. You want to make sure it's right - this isn't simply a downshift cable but a TV cable, and it's critical to the proper shifting of the tranny - incorrect and the tranny can fry very quickly!
Make sure you have a good strong sturdy mount for the cables, and a geometry corrector for the carb to attach the TV cable to - the geometry corrector is critcal as well!

Re: Transmission downshift cable won't reach
not even the tbi cables are right.
i had to modify mine it would connect to the carb bout it wouldnt reach if it was in the bracket or wouldnt detent. (cant quite rember over a year ago lol)
either way the way i did it i made my own bracket for the thorttle cable and tv cable to run thourgh and connect to the carb. mad it out of a qjet and a tbi bracket

Re: Transmission downshift cable won't reach
If I remember correctly, there are 13 different 700r4 kickdown cables used... Seriously. So, in my opinion, the easiest, safest thing to do is use one of the univeral ones and cut it to length.

Re: Transmission downshift cable won't reach
As far as I know, there were only 3 or 4, not 13 - a TPI, a TBI, a carb, and maybe a different one for the cross-fire injection - the only 4 intake options available from factory.
These are TV cables, NOT kickdown cables - they are self adjusting units, and by design I don't see how any "cut to length" universal cable could work as the lenghth of the cable and it's housing must be set in order for the system to work. A kickdown cable just pulls, where as a TV cable pulls a specific amount, and the geometry of such (including how far it 'pulls') is critical to the proper operation of the trans.
If a proper cable mount location, a proper cable bracket, and a proper cable geometry is attained with a proper geometry corrector, then everything will work as it should.

They are indeed TV cables, technically, as I stated, however, many people refer to them as "kick down" or "passing gear" cables. The technical name doesn't change what many people call them, so I was merely making sure everyone was on the same page...
A cut to length kickdown cable works, because you cut it to length. The geometry is determined by thelinkage and bracketry, not the cable itself.
