700R4 "slipping" on downshift to 1st

After a fair amount of work I got my '84 T/A back together and it is still lacking. Besides a bunch of front end work, I also replaced the TV cable (GM part) and governor (Sonnax Corvette part) hoping to cure a couple shifting problems. The TV cable that came would not self-adjust, but the governor that came out looked great.

It's SUBSTANTIALLY better - I was suffering massively delayed 1->2 upshifts, hunting in 3 & 4, and what I'll call slipping in 1st and 2nd on downshifts (but I don't really think is slipping - see below).

Now, 1->2 upshift happens reliably and comfortably. It will hold 3rd or 4th without hunting, and it does not seem to slip on a downshift to 2nd.

But it's still having a problem with downshifting to 1st at very low speeds. At, say, 20mph right after the 1st->2nd upshift, if you floor it will downshift to "1st" and then totally disengage, the engine just revving freely. If you back off the throttle, it will re-engage 1st or 2nd (depending on road speed). If you floor it from a stop it will wind out 1st & 2nd with zero slipping.

It does not feel like slipping, at least not as I've ever experienced it. It feels like a full mechanical disengagement, like the transmission is in neutral.

The fluid is beautiful, with no signs of burning. It's so crystal clear you can barely even see it on the dipstick. The fluid and filter were both changed about 6000 miles/18 months ago, and the fluid that came out wasn't burnt either. About 1qt of it is new, fluid lost when I replaced the governor.

When I replaced the TV cable I tugged on the spring inside the transmission to ensure the plunger was still attached and moved smoothly. It certainly seemed to.

I'm not sure what elseto look at. I feel like this is an adjustment somewhere I'm missing. Anyone have any ideas?

I know this is an old thread, but I'm having similar problems. Did you get it fixed??

Hilariously, I don't remember if I did or didn't. I sold the car about two years ago, and my recollection of it has gotten a little hazy. Sorry!

Hey, thanks for the reply! I adjusted my tv cable and that seems to have fixed my problem! Hopefully that helps others with similar issues. Thanks!
