Rear end Whirling sound? and now grinding

i just got a 91 z28 last week, it has had a whirling noise from the rear when i'm steady with the gas. i thought this mighta just been the tires but today comin home it started grinding and smoking, it kinda looks like maybe a brake line leak n maybe the drums grinding? or does this sound like gears and the transfer case? what am i to do i just blew 900 on this as a to and from work car til i swap engines in my other driver.

Could be the brakes or could be the rear end. Take the tires off and look around and take the cover off the rearend and make sure it has gear oil in it.

i bet the rear will lock up reallll soon. take off the driveshaft and see how loose the nut is on the rear end. the big nut hidden by the driveshaft on the pinion of the rear.

well i think the rear end is a lil outta my mechanic ability so its goin to Sarver Automotive and Performance monday to be rebuilt with 4:10's Might as well take care of it and overhaul at the same time.

If you only have a 305 in your current car I wouldnt be going with such a steep gear you will regret it big time.

Re: Rear end Whirling sound? and now grinding

the "whirling" sound is most likely your gears. time for new ones.

my car made a clunking/grinding/jerking noise when my axle bearing let loose 50 miles after a complete overhaul.

...and I wouldn't with anything more than 3.42.

well its already got a 3" flowmaster exhaust, ram air hood, k&n air cleaner so i'm makin a lil more horses already so i went with 3.73 gears, gettin all new bearings and seals and maybe a new yoke the guy said. after labor n parts only gonna be a lil over $700

So your making like 10hp over stock. Mostly from the ram air hood

Re: Rear end Whirling sound? and now grinding

well these guys said the same bout 4.10 and too much backlash but with the tires i got on it it might have a lil hum to it but will run fine, but after gettin the thing through inspection i do plan on a decent edelbrock carb and spacer, maybe do away with high beams n get more air ports, paint n rims next summer. but i see ppl runnin 3.73's with 305's. i take it maybe 14 miles round trip to work, whats the strain gonna cause? and what do i do to lessen it? not tryin to sound like a dick but i thought exhaust and k&n air cleaner and ram air hood is rated for at least 15% which is like 34.5 more hp? anyone else see a problem runnin 3.73's on a A4 behind a 305?

Re: Rear end Whirling sound? and now grinding

the gear recommendations came from assuming you had the factory TPI system on your 91 z28. 3.73's are fine.

i would pass up on the edeljunk though...one cannot overcome the secondary air valve with any sort of rational tuning.

...what else isn't stock? care to expand on the exhaust? Longtubes? 2055's? what throttle valve cable setup you running?

no way to pass inspection going with a carb. also no reason... to get worse gas milage, maybe less power, less value on the car. you would lose your computer, and check engine light, and have to wait for the motor and choke to warm up before getting on it.

Re: Rear end Whirling sound? and now grinding

i'm confused, a z28 should have tpi, not tbi. you probably dont have a z28, but you have an rs. under your filter is a throttle body, fuel injected, unless somebody already converted to a carb, no way for me to tell you your cars history
