Transmission Help!!!

Hi, im new to the site and also new to 3rd gens. Im not a great car mechanic so I need a little help with this one. I just bought a 1983 Daytona Trans Am, and its is amazing. It is a show car inside and out with only 34,000 miles and everything is original. Now as you can guess this car has been sitting and has not been driven much, so im working out some kinks. The problem im having is with the overdrive, it has the 4speed auto trans, and at 70mph im running at about 3200 rpms. Is this normal??? Im pretty sure its not kicking into overdrive. This isnt a huge problem since im not planning on having this as a daily driver, but I would still like to have the problem solved if I can. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Transmission Help!!!

change the fluid an filter, while you have the pan off if u feel like comfy doing it drop the valve body out its prolly got a ball inside of it sticking... this isnt a huge deal... but if you've never messed with an automatic..id suggest finding a good tranny shop to do it for u

Re: Transmission Help!!!

Take it out on the road and put the lever in 1st. take off down the road then shift to 2nd. then Drive. then finally overdrive, taking note how many times it shifts.

...You already said it has 4 gears, so it needs to shift 3 times right?

Re: Transmission Help!!!

ok you'll have the 1-2 shift 2-3 shift 3-4 shift then the torque convertor should lock up after that... since its the 700r4 but that rpm at 70mph... either someone has changed the rear end gears or like u said its not goin into 4th

Re: Transmission Help!!!

but don't confuse the lock-up for a "gear" either! lol...i've known people that have.
