t5 question

i got a 89 rs 305 {wc} 5spd parts car. the motor has water in it and the floor is compleatly gone. i took the t5 out and when the fluid dumped out it looked pretty good at first . but after a little bit a bunch of water come out ot the gearbox. the imput shaft by the tail housing turns freely no grinding no noise.
i was wondering if i should put some new fluid in it just until i can get it to a transmission guy to look at it or is this thing just shot. any sugestions?

Re: t5 question

I have sen alot of those that sit outside with the shifter off and they then get a small amount of water in them. It is amazing how quickly the gears get pitted. Sometimes they can look pretty bad. Just depends how long it was in there? Take the tail and lid off and have a look. Other wise run it see what happens.

Re: t5 question

Run it in your 92. Change the fluid after running it up to temp. If it makes noise, take it apart.

If it's rusted bad enough to need a rebuild, the gears will be able to be polished and bearings replaced. Not much worse than a standard rebuild.

It would be okay on a non-world-class model which had brass blocker rings.
It is *not* okay on a world class model due to the blocker ring fibre material.

You won't get 100% of old fluid out with a change. Multiple changes will get most of it out.
